Display : Workbench& This utility does much the same as&FKey, found in the Workbench 2 extras&disk, but it doesn't have FKey's&problem of it's function keys clashing&with another application that is also&using the function keys. C-MAC will&also run on 1.3 machines as well as on
Workbench 2.& To recap. FKey allows you to assign&a CLI command to each of the ten&function keys. So, at the press of a&function key, you can list df0:, load&a disk's startup-sequence into a text&editor or any of the other things you&can do on a single line of the CLI.&This is exactly what C-MAC does but by&having a window always open on the&Workbench screen and which has to be&selected before the function keys will&be recognised it neatly side-steps the&problems caused by applications also
using the function keys.& C-MAC works as it should and works&well. It saves what you've assigned to&the function keys and will reload them&automatically when you next run it.&Under normal use a small window, just&a single text-line deep, is on the&Workbench screen. When active, if you&press the return key the full-sized&window will open to allow you to edit&the text for the function keys. I&would have preferred a click of the&right mouse button to open the large&window as this seems to be the&convention with other programs that&enlarge and shrink windows under&Workbench 1.3. There is also no close&button on the output window it uses.&Once again you have to press the
return key.& The only other problem with C-MAC&is that it seems to slow the Workbench&down more than it should, at least on&the A600. Only slightly, but it is¬iceable. My only regret with this&program is that the author didn't go&the whole hog and make the function&keys execute scripts instead of just&single lines. That would have been
really useful.& If you're a wb.2 user and have&found FKey more trouble than it's&worth or you're still with 1.3 and&would like to be able to execute CLI&commands at the touch of a button then&C-MAC fits the bill and does so with&the minimum of fuss. A useful little
